TOTO – XIV (CD)
Wow! This was what came out of my mouth when I first put this new Toto disc in my CD player, and I was quite impressed with what I heard on the band’s newest album in nine years.
From the melodic guitar driven energy of opener “Running Out Of Time” and the emotionally fired up vibes of every song hereafter made this a superb listening experience on Toto’s newest rock sensation: “XIV”.
Just one listen to the infectious lead vocals and the memorable choruses of “21st Century Blues”, and you’ll be humming every note to this early Toto inspired soon to be classic. And of course, Steve Lukather’s bluesy guitar licks and leads just adds more spice to this song. This is a track where you’ll find yourself dancing to every beat found on this one.
The lead vocals of singer Joseph Williams is definitely a solid key point here, as his vocals with that of Steve Lukather’s lead vocals, on few of the songs here shows an interesting contrast in Toto’s ability to keep their songs very interesting vocally. The convincing passion within the singing on this album also reminds of the early years of Toto, which I thought was an interesting aspect about this album.
Also, the backing vocals on the teary eyed track “Unknown Soldier (For Jeffrey)”, featured backing vocals none other than Michael McDonald along with Lukather, Williams and Amy Keys, which makes this song a classic Toto song.
The intensity found on this track and the record as a whole makes all 11 cuts here complete.
Personally, I really enjoyed listening to this new album by Toto, as the 11 songs found here, rock with passion and fire, which is such a rarity in the rock music of today.
You want highs, lows, harmonies, melodies, emotions, superbly written songs that’ll move you in such profound ways, check out “XIV” by Toto, as it’s sure to sooth and please your spirit in ways unimaginable. Excellent.
