Sunterra – Reborn

Austrian gothic/industrial metallers Sunterra have been around since 1998, with some serious line up changes, a ten year hiatus, and their newest “Reborn” EP shows the band has what it takes to stay around for awhile longer.

“Reborn” is a strong mixture of gothic and industrial metal tones, with growls and almost soprano-like female vocals in-tow.

The six cuts found on this almost 30 minute ep are dark sounding, with industrial overtones throughout, reminding of a post-apocalyptic world. Sunterra also incorporates groove elements within their music along with atmospheric vibes, as can be heard on the tranquil, darkened and insane sounding “Shut Up!!!”. This definitely is a very fitting song title to let the average listener know, if you don’t like our music, then shut up!

This quartet’s music is very straightforward and simplistic in approach, so for this reason there are not many “over the wall” moments, whereby, the listener would be like “wow”, but it is interestingly put together for what is presented here.

Sunterra’s music should appeal to fans of Crematory, Ministry, Paradise Lost and even early The Sisters Of Mercy.

This album is not my style of gothic/industrial metal but who knows, you might be pleasantly surprised with this Austrian band, as they’re surely capable of leaving you feeling isolated in the dead of winter.     NRT Records     Sarjoo Devani
