SAMAEL - Solar Soul (CD)
Remember when Samael released three groundbreaking black metal releases in the form of “Worship Him”, “Blood Ritual” and “Ceremony Of Opposites” back in the early nineties? Well, if you do, don’t get excited as “Solar Soul” is now reissued as a numbered, collector’s CD, with a bonus track. This album was a total marked departure of their astral gothic metal sound, which was a departure of their black metal style back in the mid-late nineties.
This album is more gothic metal in style, maybe with some dark, eerie vibes from their earlier days, but nothing to the point of being extreme, which could be called black metal.
Their musicianship is topnotch with skillful playing and delivery of some solid songs, which should appeal to gothic metal fans everywhere. I think it was their move to the non-black metal style, brought about their demise as a band, as it was a style totally disliked by their hardcore, cult followers from the black metal music era.
They’re definitely a solid group of musicians and have tons of creativity within their songwriting, as all of their songs are packed with so much-atmosphere. “Solar Soul” is a great example of this character about Samael’s strange progression from the extreme to the more suttle and dark in tone.
Samael used to be a killer band, with black metal music taken to newer heights, but then threw it all out the window for a more accessible style and sound. [Metal Mind] Sarjoo Devani
