OBSOLETE – Riven EP (CD)
Columbus, Ohio’s quintet, Obsolete play an emotionally charged brand of dark progressive metal, with hints of metal and heavy rock.
Obsolete’s music is a strong mixture of progressive metal elements fused together with heavy rock influences, with some interesting electric acoustic guitar passages. Vocally, I was not too convinced as they reminded me a lot of Serg Tankian of System Of A Down. Not a bad influence to have, but there are some strong similarities here.
Apart from this aspect, the vocals are tight and go with the music Obsolete has written for this four track EP “Riven”. However, don’t write off the vocals just yet, as they’ve plenty of potential provided they make the change for the better. I did find the slow singing style along to the acoustic guitar rhythms on “From The Beginning” promising, so this is a decent vocal style they should entertain going forward.
The four cuts making up this EP are musically diverse, with plenty of catchy hooks and harmonies that’ll make you relive your past glories in life.
Not bad, but nothing that’ll move mountains either. [Self-Financed] Sarjoo Devani
