NANGILIMA – The Dark Matter (CD)
Swedish doom/death metallers Nangilima play a very dark, melancholic driven depressing breed of metal, which bears no mercy on the listener. Basically, if you’re not accustomed to this kind of extreme metal, I’d not bother, as this is very, very depressive in feel and sound.
“The Dark Matter” treads a very fine line between doom metal and death metal, however, the only element differentiating the two would be the dark vocals on this record. Their guitars are down tuned to hell, so all of the chords that are played sound so fucking depressive and miserable, where you just want to stab yourself in the throat. It’s just my curiosity as to how in the world Nangilima get their songs to sound so sad and misery prone. I guess it is their trade secret; but anyhow, there are several songs on “The Dark Matter”, with two being instrumentals (intro and outro), and the other tracks feature vocals from a mental home resident, it feels like it.
Nangilima is a good band, their heads may not be in the right place, but their musical creativity and playing is in the right direction if you love sadness. It’s takes creativity to be miserable and to do it effectively, I might add.
Some of the closest references to Nangilima would be Swallow The Sun, Novembers Doom and even the first album from Paradise Lost “Lost Paradise”. Check it out and be ready to pop some Prozac into your mouth… [Xtreem] Sarjoo Devani
