Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band - Straight To You Live
Kenny Wayne Shepherd and his blues band are back with an energetic live album from their concert in Leverkusener Jazztage Festival in Leverkusener, Germany, on November 7, 2019.
Having seen Kenny Wayne Shepherd on the first ever G3 Tour in 1996 along with the likes of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson, I was impressed with this live recording, as it is Kenny at his best, playing live. The whole band sound pretty good on this live recording, with the sound mixing, engineering and production making "Straight To You Live" a complete experience in live music.
The vocal performances from Kenny and guitarist/vocalist Noah Hunt is pretty tight, and the display of variation in the two blues styles is a stand out on this album of 12 tracks. Kenny's traditional, southern blues rock style is very prevalent here, and the passion found in his singing just moves the listener emotionally. Noah Hunt is a good singer with his unique blues style, more in line with Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton to a certain extent.
Some of the cuts making the live roster from Kenny's previous and latest recorded efforts are: "Woman Like You", "Long Time Running", "I Want You", "Diamonds & Gold" and the passionately executed blues rock antics of "Heat Of The Sun". Furthermore, "Shame, Shame Shame" makes this a really good live recording, with plenty of variety to be had.
Lastly, there is an awesome cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", which simply rocked my world with its bluesy grooves.
Whether you're drunk on some cheap Wisconsin produced beer or high on some potent Louisiana harvested pot, "Straight To You Live" is a bigger high especially if you're feeling down and miserable. Kenny Wayne Shepherd's music is sure to raise your spirit to a positive state of mind. Excellent. Provogue Records Sarjoo Devani
