HORRIFIED – Descent Into Putridity (CD)
Newcastle, England’s old school death metal music gauntlet, Horrified is sure to blast your head off with their unearthly and unholy music, which comes at you like a demon hungry for your soul.
Their debut record “Descent Into Putridity” is very reminiscent of early Pestilence, Dismember, Autopsy, Entombed and Carnage. Despite these well-known influences within their music, Horrified is definitely making attempts at creating their own blend of flesh rotting death metal. Their songs feature diverse musical passages, with intricately crafted changes and off the wall tempo changes, all the while you feel death taking over your bruised and tattered body.
The production and over all sound are okay, a bit too thin for my liking, but I am quite sure this will only get better on their sophomore release. Despite this one glitch, the quartet can be heard with clarity, and their skin shredding lead on “Buried Among Putrified Flesh” stands out, just torturing your ears and leaving you to bleed all over.
“Veil Of Souls” starts off with a hellish drumming assault, with the downtuned, heavy as fuck guitar rhythms, before you are torn to pieces from Dan Alderson’s demonic, agonized vocal punishment. Plenty of early Dismember and Pestilence influences flowed from the bowels of this repugnant song, and this was definitely one of highlights here.
Horrified is a young band and they’ve tons of potential to re-ignite a death metal style, which made old school death metal music such a revered, extreme style of metal in the late eighties. [Memento Mori] Sarjoo Devani
