HACKNEYED – Death Prevails (CD)
Germany’s horrific and guttural death metal quintet released this slam of pure bone crushing death metal in 2008, and still sounds as fresh as can be today, seven years later.
“Death Prevails” is a concoction of heart stopping blastbeats, vicious snare drum assaults, garbage disposal-sounding vocals, skin shredding guitars, and a low end low enough to blow your eardrums out. The killer studio production makes this rampant death metal chaos all that more real and savagely earth shattering. “Ravenous” has this bestial sound I’ve just described above, and is what makes “Death Prevails” such a blood boiling and hellish release.
The ungodly distorted and punishing rhythms of “Axe Splatter” and “Worlds Collide” bring to mind some of the finer aural moments found on Suffocation’s jaw smashing “Effigy Of The Forgotten” album.
For listeners craving some serious atmospheric weirdness, “Bone Grinder” and “Symphony Of Death” feature some eerie and haunting keyboard passages in the background.
So, when you put the ultra heaviness together with the more atmospheric stuff on, at least on a couple of these tracks, you’re in for something very cool. It’s nothing out of this world unique, but something that keeps the music fluid and interesting to listen to.
Hackneyed is highly recommended if you enjoy your death metal in a sickening way and enough heaviness to bring your world crashing down. People, this is the real shit when it comes of death metal, so check it out and die. This reissue by Metal Mind Productions is very cool due to its Digipac packaging and nicely presented booklet along with the golden disc. [Metal Mind Productions] Sarjoo Devani
