GYPSY – Twisted Levity (CD)
Kolkata, India’s Gypsy play an awesome style of heavy metal, hard rock and some blues tinged licks with such emotion, it sure to perk you up and make you feel damn good.
There are six songs here including a bonus of “The Shoemaker (demo)”, and they all sound so different, you’d be thinking it is a different band playing on each one. Gypsy is such a unique band, especially having a fulltime sitarist in the band also gives the band’s already eclectic heavy rock & roll music an avant-garde edge over the competition.
“Turned Into Stone” has a ripping trade of lead run between the sitar and the guitar, and then the main rhythm of this song reminds of Iron Maiden’s Dave Murray and Adrian Smith during their prime. The drumming here too has that Maiden-esque feel to it, but with Gypsy’s own unique approach.
Their singer has some really kick ass influences from the likes of Alice In Chains, Dokken, even a little bit of Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. Musically, there are also slight hints of early Judas Priest, Deep Purple, and blues guitarist virtuoso Eric Johnson too.
Gypsy has such a huge potential to become well known and a successful the world over, as they’ve some pop sensibilities without being overly pompous and rock star-like. Check these guys out, as they’ll take you away to an eternal and blissful paradise with “Twisted Levity”. [Transcending Obscurity Distro] Sarjoo Devani
