GRUESOME – Savage Land (CD)
Gruesome is a band dedicated to keeping alive the brutally charged, melodic death metal sound of Death alive, and “Savage Land” features tons of Death similarities in brutal savagery.
This band features members Matt Harvery of the legendary Exhumed (guitars/vocals), drummer Gus Rios (Malevolent Creation), guitarist Daniel Gonzalez (Possessed), former Derketa bassist Robin Mazen on bass guitars. With such a killer line up, “Savage Land” is one fucking hell of a slab of death metal that’s sure to kick your ass inside and out. Musically, it reminds of the good old days of Florida death metal, in particularly Death, with its stylistically constructed harmonies along with the head splitting guitar work.
The vocals, drum arrangements, and the overall rhythmic flow of the death metal sound here is very reminiscent of early Death, but in no way is it ripping-off Chuck Schuldiner’s vision.
Matt and Crew have done a fantastic job of keeping Chuck and Death’s memory alive in Gruesome, and “Savage Land” is a close account of what Death sounded like on “Scream Bloody Gore”, “Leprosy” and “Spiritual Healing”.
And the Ed Repka album artwork of Cannibals feasting on some poor, unlucky bastard’s body parts and flesh makes this album even sicker.
Here’s a toast to a chalice of tainted blood and ungodly screams of death, as Gruesome is sure to make you bang your head like it’s late eighties extreme metal scene again. [Relapse] Sarjoo Devani
