GHOULGOTHA – The Deathmass Cloak (CD)
I love death metal when it is done really well and you can feel the negative energy blow right through you, but Ghoulgotha go even further musically.
“The Deathmass Cloak” is a weird and tripped out musical journey of sadistic proportions. There are many, many strange yet sensible variations on this CD containing ten songs, and musically there are plenty of interesting moments to be experienced here.
Take influences from Incantation, Immolation, and Gory Blister for their similar musical weirdness, and you’ve Ghoulgotha. “Saturnal Rites” is one heck of a song with its slow to mid-paced tempo changes, and just fires up the mosh pit insanity by a thousand percent – this bitch is fucking lethal as poison. It has some interesting dynamics with the guitars slowly chugging away, then abruptly speeding up to grind you in a bloody pulp.
There are also some killer doom/death metal influences here from the likes of early Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, as you’ll hear on the depressive and unsettling vibes of “Prophetic Oration of Self”. Man, does this song remind of a very early My Dying Bride, within the vocals here.
Ghoulgotha is original, maybe too much for their-own good, but I believe they will even do greater and unique things musically and vocally on future releases.
“The Deathmass Cloak” is extremely heavy as well as melodic and full of total atmosphere that’ll have you completely immersed in the aesthetics of fine depressive elements and more. [Dark Descent] Sarjoo Devani
