DEREK SHERINIAN – Mythology (CD)
This being Derek Sherinian’s third solo opus, it is musically even more unique then his prior two efforts, but the cool thing about “Mythology” is that it treads in uncharted territory for Sherinian. Musically, it is a solid variation of shred guitar by Zakk Wylde, Steve Stevens, and melodic guitar accolades, courtesy of Toto guitarist Steve Lukather. Sherinian’s synthesizer playing is excellent as ever, with many awesome influences accompanied by top-notch solid rhythm section.
“Goin’ To Church” features Lukather’s most memorable lead runs and guitar playing, which gives this rock anthem such a superb feel and soul. This album also features guitarist extraordinaire Allan Holdsworth, which also gives the track “One Way Or The Other” a complex jazz style and feel. I also do not want to forget guitarist John Sykes contribution here, on the track “God Of War”, which is just as memorable as the other songs here. Some of the other notable musicians also featured on “Mythology” include drummers Simon Phillips, Brian Tichy (also plays guitars on a few cuts), bassists Tony Franklin, Marco Mendoza and violinist Jerry Goodman.
Musically, looking back at Sherinian’s first two solo efforts, this album number three is much more daring in songwriting and the varied styles ranging from modern hard rock to metal. And yes, Zakk Wylde also does the lead vocals on “The River Song”, very Creedence Clearwater Revival-like, but heavier and modern in sound. I can definitely picture this album getting airplay on metal radio stations.
Check it out and let your fists fly in the air and your body groove to the musical spirit of “Mythology”. [Armoury] Sarjoo Devani
