CURSE UPON A PRAYER – Rotten Tongues (CD)
Finlandia’s Curse Upon A Prayer play a very filthy and disgusting style of black metal, which reminds of the good old days of Marduk, Immortal and Gorgoroth.
With its album cover sporting a skeletal head of some ghastly-looking animal, just goes to show how sinister and dreadful Curse Upon A Prayer is. And their music too, is more in line with this depressive album art, which is a positive, at least musically and vocally; this band lives up to its name.
The double bass drumming passages fracture your bones along with your senses, while their saber tooth-like guitars pull apart your spirit in many directions unimaginable.
The raspy vocals are just that, very raspy, coming across someone gasping for their last breath, while they’re being buried alive. As painful it is listening to the vocal exertions, “Rotten Tongues” is one hell of a rotten release in all aspects.
Mind you, this Finnish band does not cater to trendy ears or bandwagon jumpers, as their glimmer of total hopelessness is truly etched within their impious songwriting.
The darkness, cold, despair, absence of light and immense hate you feel on this nine tracker is as real as it gets without losing its momentum in the "ugly" category.
This is black metal done the ancient way, with tons of suffocating atmosphere to choke the world in one shot.
Not for the faint at heart, as this is not your father’s heavy metal music. [Inverse Records] Sarjoo Devani
