Broken Hope – Mutilated and Assimilated (Death Metal album review)

"'The Meek Shall Inherit Shit' is a song I've been wanting to write lyrically for some time. I'm an environmentalist-a guy who considers environment, rather than heredity, as the primary influence on the development of human beings.
Homo sapiens are living in a shitpile. We constantly foul our nest, we are killing the planet, and we cause up to 2,000 extinctions every year. Look, I don't want to get all hippy and political here. I just love the natural world so much and I hate what's being done to it. It fucking pisses me off! And you can hear my anger in the lyrics and the music of this track." Jeremy Wagner/Broken Hope

Broken Hope - Mutilated And Assimilated

Wow! This was the actual word, which came out of my mouth when I first put on Broken Hope’s newest and sickest creation yet, in the bloody disguise of “Mutilated And Assimilated”.
Listening to the 12 horrific tracks of pure blood churning and gut regurgitating death metal here shattered my spirit and left me without my shell, man this was such a trippin’ out of body experience. This album has emotions ranging from fist stabbing workouts to head decapitating guitar rhythms and an overall darkness, which pervades like a dark cloud of infinite rain. Yes, it does sound morbid, miserable, horror-filled, and more so violent than anything else, but “Mutilated And Assimilated” is a journey into the never-ending realms of death beyond anyone’s twisted imagination.

Opening cut “The Meek Shall Inherit Shit” (see video for it in this post) jumps at you like a blood sucking leech, which does not let up, and drags you to your merciless death with it’s choppy guitar rhythms, mind numbing riffs, and bestial vocals hellish enough to make the devil run. The guitar, bass guitar and drumming assault on this song is nothing short of flesh ripping brutality that’ll leave you worn out and screaming in agony once you’ve heard.
The title track “Mutilated And Assimilated” is just as hellish, but with some melodic lead runs thrown in for good measure, which gives it a very cool touch of musicianship from these five death mongers.
On the topic of musicianship, guitarist Jeremy Wagner and band just tear up the death metal sound barrier on this album. I am impressed with the fact, that they’ve kept it heavy and brutally sick, yet given it another dimension of playing that hints at their earlier stuff but has such a modern touch to the musicianship and production values here. Producer Scott Creekmore definitely brought out Broken Hope’s best playing to date and surely made sure that no death metal brutality is lacking in any of the 12 tracks on display here.
Moreover, “Beneath Arctic Ice” is an eerie and chilling sounding instrumental, which brings to mind human corpses floating under large polar ice caps after a tragic cruise liner capsizing in the darkest and remotest regions of the world. “Swamped In Gorehog” is a rerecorded version of the “Swamped In Gore” track from their first album, and was done for Broken Hope’s 25th anniversary. It is a song, which is still performed at their concerts for their fans to this day, so what a fitting way to celebrate their lengthy anniversary as a death metal band.
I highly recommend checking out “Mutilated And Assimilated”, because if this insane whore does not rip out your fucking limbs, I don’t know who will!   Century Media Records      Sarjoo Devani
