BLEEDING UTOPIA – Darkest Potency (CD)
Sweden’s Bleeding Utopia is a very talented band, which play their death metal music with such solid strength and execution, it is sure to tire the listener out with such insane headbanging.
Musically, these guys are more in the vein of The Crown, Amon Amarth, The Haunted and even a little bit of The Black Dahlia Murder. Their guitar rhythms, drumming and the semi-deathly vocals have that Swedish Death Metal music feel to them. The songwriting on “Darkest Potency” is heavy, tight and dark to a point, but it is something that’s not to write home about, as, it was done by the bands above. However, credit should be given to them for the session drumming of Kevin Talley (Suffocation, Daath, Six Feet Under) on this nine tracker, as his playing thick, heavy and huge in sound, which also adds much depth in the rhythm and timing section for Bleeding Utopia.
Will “Darkest Potency” break new ground, definitely not, but it is safe to say that this latest release is sure to garner them new fans as well as fans of the Swedish style of old school death metal music. Just one listen to the infectious grind drumming parts and total brutality of the guitar riffs and vocal torture on the standout track “This Is Where We Die” is like getting a knock out punch to the forehead.
This is a good release, but if you’re expecting something a little more daring and interesting, but don’t be fooled by Bleeding Utopia’s generic Swedish death metal.
