AVERSIONS CROWN – Tyrant (CD)
Brisbane, Australia may not be a total hotbed of extreme metal, but modern death metallers Aversions Crown is about to change that with their newest release “Tyrant”. Their music is a modern touch of barfed and suffocated vocals mixed with more of a modern style of guitar rhythms and drumming that’s sure to rip your heart right out of your chest, while you lay bleeding. Okay, these guys are not that extreme, but tracks like “Xenoforms”, “Earth Sterilister” and “Conqueror” just take the listener by the hair and throw them around until they’re knocked unconscious.
Imagine Daath running into Fear Factory minus all of the industrial death sounds and marrying Berzerker (now defunct Australian death metal unit), and you’ve the blazing sonic sickness of Aversions Crown. It’s good to see Aversions Crown formulating their own style and sound within the development of their music and songwriting. “Tyrant” is unique somewhat, and the vision this band has can be clearly heard on the ten songs found here. Even though they utilize growls and agonized screams on this raging slab of total death, they have the drive to be original yet maintaining the band’s brutal sound. Also, admirable is the group’s use of synthesizers used sparingly as a backdrop to a good portion of their cuts. This use of synths is tastefully implemented, kind of taking the listener to a surreal world of suffering through isolation and other forms of mental afflictions.
However, the oddity of Aversions Crown’s music is something that’ll require a good several spins before you start to feel their rage and angst boil within your blood red veins. Their death metal music is not the type you can exploit upon the first listen, as repeated listens make this album more sinister in its overall vibe.
This band is definitely onto something interesting and in due time, I see them progressing the extremes of death metal to a whole new level. [Nuclear Blast] Sarjoo Devani
