“Deathhammer”, the newest release from Dutch death/doom stalwarts Asphyx is a total return to their old school death metal roots. “Deathhammer” packs the punch of their earlier releases, namely: “The Rack” (my all-time favorite) and “Last One On Earth”. All ten tracks on here shatter the sound barrier with their ripping downtuned guitars buzzing bass guitars. Martin Van Drunen’s vocals still remind of Asphyx’s earlier years and a little of his Pestilence days too.
Musically, it is dark with mid tempo assaults and loaded with many depressive and emotional riffs and leads.
Listen to the atmospheric and hellish sounding “Der Landser” with the melodic and emotion driven leads and riffs and you will be convinced that you’re trapped in world of misery and pain.
“Deathhammer” for some strange reason reminds me of ancient times when people were tortured for their crimes against the innocent and when they made great efforts resisting the opposition such as the church, which had a greater degree of control within the earlier days of Europe’s formation.
This album is highly recommended if you enjoyed “The Rack” as it has a lot of that feeling, which made the latter such a classic. Do not pass up “Deathhammer” or you will be met with thy doom.
