ALESSANDRO BERTONI – Keystone (CD)
Synthesizer and keyboard player Alessandro Bertoni plays such outstanding synth driven compositions along with superbly played guitars, bass guitars and drumming, that “Keystone” is sure to take your breath away. This is definitely free rock music played with the best progressive elements in tow, and the flow of sound here is just unbeatable.
Listening to world-class musicianship on Bertoni’s “Keystone” album was an out of body experience for me, as his songs just stole my soul. It was pretty eerie when my spirit left my body, I could see myself sitting at my desk and listening to Bertoni’s synth/keyboard infused rock. Yet, I do not know what it is about the songs on “Keystone”, which just make you forget about worldliness and stay so focused on the aural bliss that pervades the eight songs featured here.
“Pacifica Rampage” features one of the best slow to mid-paced leads I’ve heard in such a long time, and I tell you, guitarist Brett Garsed hit it on the nail with this baby. Drummer Virgil Donati plays his smooth groove-laced percussive work so well, you’re just destined to feel the grooves at the highest level of comfort known to your ears. Bassist Ric Fierabracci lays his multilayered bass chops down, and here too, his groove oriented playing will get you all wound up. Lastly, as far as the musicianship is concerned here, synth/keyboardist Alessandro Bertoni plays such stellar arrangements and passages that you’ll feel the world pass you by, yet you will not even be moving. How freakin’ cool is this? He will definitely make you feel an out of this world auditory experience, which is hard to replicate in real life, but he is a master of creating such synergy between images and sounds, which the listener can see, hear and feel.
Also, this album was produced non-other than synthesizer and keyboard virtuoso Derek Sherinian, so he too brought out the best in everyone’s playing, especially in Bertoni’s playing all around. Alessandro Bertoni’s “Keystone” album is a definitive must for any guitar and synth rock instrumental fan, as it treads newer musical territory, but keeps every note, rhythm and beat played tastefully interesting. 100% need to give this one a listen.
