ACHREN – The White Death (CD)
The UK’s Achren call themselves a “Blood Metal” band, but I do not see anything bloody and disgusting about them. Personally, I believe this quartet is an extreme metal band with black and thrash metal music traits, which actually works quite well for their style and sound.
The execution of their music and vocals is tight and complement each other really well as they keep it interesting and insanely twisted. Yes, they’re good at what they play, and show their desire to be unique on this three track ep. However, they’re still refining their sound and forging something well worth listening to. You’re thinking, “progressive”, by no means is their music and song arrangements progressive as the changes are interesting but not dynamically beyond comprehension.
Take the best elements of At The Gates, God Dethroned and throw in pinch of Viking savagery from Amon Amarth, and you’ve Achren. Having heard these influences within their music is awesome as the bands mentioned above were innovators of their respective style within their heyday.
“The White Death” ep is certainly a savage listen as the three songs on here jump out at you unsuspectingly, then throw you down to the ground, and before you know it, their razor-like riffs and grotesque vocals have severed your neck. Now, do not be afraid of this beast known as Achren because they will kill your ears, the pain will be even greater than death itself, so prepare for the unholy torture. [Ceol Dorchas] Sarjoo Devani
