A Winter Lost is an old school black metal trio, who hail from the frigid landscapes of Canada, and their music is so evil, dark and brutal, it will want to make you desecrate some headstones at your local cemetery, ha, ha. Seriously, their musical style and songwriting is very akin to that of the ancient style of black metal perfected by the likes of Carpathian Forest, Dark Fortress, Zemial, Magus, Absu and with some hints of Darkthrone, post “Soulside Journey”.
A Winter Lost have written a few of their 12 tracks in English and rest in German as guitarist, bassist and songwriter Chase Suorland is of German descent – makes perfect sense. If you do not understand the German language, their cold, raw and blasphemous music more than makes up for their foreign language antics.
Personally, their production had a lot to be desired as the drums sounded thin, the vocals came across more in the background, and it seemed like more of the focus was on the guitars. The sound is not that terrible, but if you’re going to be effective in pulling your listeners into their stereo speakers with your cold, raw primitive black metal, at least balance all the instruments including the vocals in the final mix.
Apart from this minor flaw, I am definitely looking forward to more cold black metal from this Nova Scotia band as they’ve enough fire within their souls to set this world ablaze.
