MASTADON – The Hunter [Reprise]

Atlanta’s quartet Mastodon has been at it over a decade with their brand of heavy rock. “The Hunter” is their newest release showcasing 13 tracks of mid-paced tempo, dirge driven guitars and vocals that almost mesmerize the listener, in this case, me. The musicianship here is pretty strong and the band tend to go with the flow on “The Hunter”. These guys are pretty good at this style of heavy rock and play their instruments with a lot of conviction.

Mastodon surely have a sound all their own, unfortunately their style of rock is not my cup of tea. This is not to say they stink, but it’s something that does not rock my boat within uncharted territories.

Check it out, if you’re into groups like Disturbed, Kyuss or High On Fire, this just might be your slab of eardrum crushing rock.

PESTILENCE – Doctrine [Mascot]

Netherland’s Pestilence is back with their latest offering; “Doctrine”, and it is full of so many of their trademark death metal sounds and style, you will feel as if you’re reliving the good old days of the late eighties death metal scene.

Musically, “Doctrine” is technical, maybe not as much as “Testimony Of The Ancients” or “Spheres”, but it is still very interesting with their unique songwriting arrangements, all the while still keeping it brutally sick and sinister in feel.

The drumming alone is very well done for all of the songs on here as they totally devastate the auditory nerves. Patrick’s vocal style and patterns are lethal enough when mixed with his downtuned, hell bent of self-destruction rhythms. And the riffs are as sharp as a newly created dagger.

Pestilence as a whole unit just crushes, especially with the superb production values, you are about get an earful of death metal that just might you cold, numb, and probably dead.

Their new material is pretty good, but for me “Malleus Maleficarum” and “Consuming Impulse” are still the true contenders when it comes to brutal, old school death metal.

“Doctrine” is sure to satisfy the extreme metal urge in the most demanding death metal purist.

ASPHYX – Deathhammer [Century Media]

“Deathhammer”, the newest release from Dutch death/doom stalwarts Asphyx is a total return to their old school death metal roots. “Deathhammer” packs the punch of their earlier releases, namely: “The Rack” (my all-time favorite) and “Last One On Earth”. All ten tracks on here shatter the sound barrier with their ripping downtuned guitars buzzing bass guitars. Martin Van Drunen’s vocals still remind of Asphyx’s earlier years and a little of his Pestilence days too.

Musically, it is dark with mid tempo assaults and loaded with many depressive and emotional riffs and leads.

Listen to the atmospheric and hellish sounding “Der Landser” with the melodic and emotion driven leads and riffs and you will be convinced that you’re trapped in world of misery and pain.

“Deathhammer” for some strange reason reminds me of ancient times when people were tortured for their crimes against the innocent and when they made great efforts resisting the opposition such as the church, which had a greater degree of control within the earlier days of Europe’s formation.

This album is highly recommended if you enjoyed “The Rack” as it has a lot of that feeling, which made the latter such a classic. Do not pass up “Deathhammer” or you will be met with thy doom.
